Droid 2: Your Patience has Paid Off!

Custom Gingerbread ROMs are abounding over at DroidForums.com! Yes, none are final but they are (in my humble opinion) finally ready enough for the real world. That means a featured post here on ADB! Both of the main ROM creators for the Droid 2/X have finally released some very decent, stable, and custom Gingerbread ROMs for your Motorola phone. Already got the OTA? No problem, these are just here to enhance your experience. Especially the Apex 2.0. His ROM had to be one of my favorites when I had my Droid 2. That favoritism continues with version 2.0 based on the latest Gingerbread available. His latest (RC2) build is really, truly 100% AOSP Gingerbread. No Blur whatsoever. This makes the pure Google experience of the Droid 1 totally possible and in my opinion is the ROM we’ve been waiting for. So long as there is at least one pure AOSP ROM for every phone, it will be a beautiful world. Bootloaders be damned, you can get a pure Google experience on your Droid 2 right now via the Apex forum hereContinue reading

Promise: New Posts are Coming!

I know, I know. Promises are like nickels. They’re actually 75% copper! And easily lost. But I promise my promise is more of a promise than a transition metal. My phone is coming in Friday or Monday (here’s hoping to the former more than the latter) and as soon as its here I’ll be posting all about my second experience with this phone. I also did manage to obtain a white one (yay eBay!) and will allow you to live vicariously via all my random posts. If you happen to own one, let me know in the poll below, I’m curious to see how many of you are still here after the whole Droid 2 debacle. You guys enjoying the OTA Gingerbread? I’m gonna enjoy CM7.

You stay classy, World Wide Web.

New Phone, New ADB 2.0?

Believe it or not, I’m abandoning my Droid 2. Yes, I know tearful. But it had to happen. Why? To be perfectly blunt, Motorola is royally messing (like to use another word…) their phones with this locked down bootloader bologna. Samsung and HTC have taken the stance of being open to development and it was Motorola that even got this ball rolling! I don’t know what got into their heads (I’m looking at you Verizon) but I don’t like it. The inability to access core functions of a phone at the kernel level is crippling the ROMs available for the Droid 2/x. In all honestly, the fact that they have the incredibly customizable (Froyo) ROMs at all is amazing considering what they’re working with. I’ll still keep on the development side of things from time to time (a la Twitter) and post some significant things to happen here. But it will be significantly less, I’m sorry.

But then again I’m really not because my new phone is…

Bypassing the Atrix Bootloader: So Close!

Anyone familiar with the bootloader situation for recent Motorola Android phones knows the sad truth of what happens when manufacturers decide to impede progress. They only slow us down. Yes, the outlook has been generally pretty bleak for anyone with a new Motorola phone, but XDA member kholk has given us new hope. I’m not even gonna try explaining it, but freemymoto.com has a great explanation here. As much as I can gather, it appears he has a way around the bootloader and all he needs now is a kernel to run. Which is great news for Atrix users and helps give hope to us Droid X/2 users. Kexec can work! Let’s pray eventually they get it running on our phones!

Plants vs. Zombies is on Android! Free Today!

After years waiting folks, the day has finally arrived! No more icons, themes, or fake apps. Yes, the real 100% genuine Plants vs. Zombies is now available for download in the Amazon Appstore for Android. No longer must you be chained to your computer or iOS to protect your lawn from the undead onslaught. Free today, this app brings the full functionality of the other platforms to Android for the first time. Is it really that big a deal? It is to me, because it’s one less thing for iOS users to hold over my head. This plus Netflix makes me pretty dang happy I’ve stuck with my Android phone. Anyways, get the app yourself today just as soon as you can. It took about 10 minutes to download over my WiFi, so be sure to take that into account. I’ll be doing a full review later today over at TechHog.com, so be sure to check that out. For now, here’s some screenshots to get ya started.

P.S. I’ll also be doing some digging to see if there’s anyway to transfer your status and achievements from other platforms so you don’t have to start over. I did just to get you some screenshots, but the overall feel is pretty much the same as other platforms. Totally worth it.

Leaked: Droid 3 Coming Q2?

Image via Technobuffalo.com

Oooh. That beautiful slab of black you see above is most likely the next in the heralded line of Droids from Motorola. Glossy black wrapped in chrome and sporting a great looking new 5 row keyboard, this beast of a phone has already been leaked. Yeah, I know my post about it is a little late and most certainly not exclusive, but I make up for it in original commentary. And my dashing good looks. Find out all my impressions, predictions, and fantastic wizardry with just a single click! Continue reading

PSA: This Blog is Rapture/Raptor Proof

Have no fear! Come hell or high water (or ravenous rampaging raptors) this blog shall press on! There was an alliteration and a pun in that last sentence, so I’m already off to a great start. Personally, this rapture business is all a bunch of bologna, but I’d just thought I’d let you know we’re gonna be ok. Also, I kinda wanted an excuse to photoshop the above image. It’s pretty late my time… Anyways, feel free to comment your plans for our last day here on Earth! I’ll still be here, looking forward to more great Android innovations, Droid 2/X ROMs, and all the stuff worth living for. Mostly bacon…

Food for thought.
