No one is cooler than my little brother. Except me of course. ALWAYS ME. But still, he’s pretty awesome as far as little brothers go. As such, he’s created a sweet little slice of cyberspace pie now known as mtolivepraiseband.wordpress.com. That’s kind of a mouthful, so we’re just gonna call it MtOPB.com from here on out (That’s pronounced “mit-OH-pee-bee”). Say it really fast and it sounds like an African swear word.
Anyways, I’m gonna be helping him set it up and get it started. Anyone in the Norfolk, NE area that wants to help contribute/play in the band can head over there in the next couple days to sign up/start following them and his shenanigans. No flaming, mk? We’re all about the positive here! Hit the source link below to head on over and show them some love!
I know, I know. Promises are like nickels. They’re actually 75% copper! And easily lost. But I promise my promise is more of a promise than a transition metal. My phone is coming in Friday or Monday (here’s hoping to the former more than the latter) and as soon as its here I’ll be posting all about my second experience with this phone. I also did manage to obtain a white one (yay eBay!) and will allow you to live vicariously via all my random posts. If you happen to own one, let me know in the poll below, I’m curious to see how many of you are still here after the whole Droid 2 debacle. You guys enjoying the OTA Gingerbread? I’m gonna enjoy CM7.
Think that new black and purple looks pretty slick as it is on the website? Yeah, me too. That’s why I decided to make more of it! Yes, this has nothing to do with tech news, but I’ve made wallpapers for both a 1080p desktop display as well as for your Android (840×480) device! If I get enough requests, of course I’ll make some more. Next up are probably 320×480 and a 1024×768 variants. These are just something I whipped up real quick, thought some of you might be interested in. They’re pretty slick. The font I use is called “Defuse” and it can be found here. I took the “splatter” from here because I was too lazy to make one myself. I’m being honest, and that counts for something, right?

Oh yeah baby! Purple and black and looking fiiiiine. Not much going on now, I know I’ve been a little (read: a LOT) lax in getting this thing updated, but I’m kinda starting to get into a groove with work and should be able to add new posts more regularly. I also know I’ve said this several times before, so take this with a grain of salt. 😛 Anyways, my sexy white Fascinate really did seem to have seriously erratic 3G/radio behavior. Texts and calls worked fine, but signal strength was all over while standing still and 3G just seemed to cycle on and off every 15 seconds. The inconsistent data pretty much rendered the phone useless, so I’m getting a replacement hopefully sometime this weekend. I will definitely post when I get my next one. Hopefully we’ll have some breakthroughs for the bluetooth or camera drivers from Samsung. Stupid proprietary PITA’s. I did get a chance to run CM7 on it before I returned it and it was glorious. This phone really feels like the super phone it is. If only this thing had a front facing camera (“FFC” from here on out) it would be perfect. Love the 720p video, just kinda need that stable 3G connection. Hopefully this next one will be better. Any hints, tips, tricks guides to what NOT to do with ROM/kernel/radio flashing? Leave a comment, help a brother out!
Believe it or not, I’m abandoning my Droid 2. Yes, I know tearful. But it had to happen. Why? To be perfectly blunt, Motorola is royally messing (like to use another word…) their phones with this locked down bootloader bologna. Samsung and HTC have taken the stance of being open to development and it was Motorola that even got this ball rolling! I don’t know what got into their heads (I’m looking at you Verizon) but I don’t like it. The inability to access core functions of a phone at the kernel level is crippling the ROMs available for the Droid 2/x. In all honestly, the fact that they have the incredibly customizable (Froyo) ROMs at all is amazing considering what they’re working with. I’ll still keep on the development side of things from time to time (a la Twitter) and post some significant things to happen here. But it will be significantly less, I’m sorry.
But then again I’m really not because my new phone is…
Now this isn’t my own work and I can’t take credit for it, but I did put it together to make it work on a PS3. I have recently obtained said console and will be working on more themes for it in the future. For now I just really wanted a kinda grungy looking Android wallpaper and this fit the bill perfectly. I merely took a wallpaper from odamieanhere and used a template by d33eniz that I took from here. d33eniz has a link in the description for a transparent .png file for those of you looking to make your own. And if you do, leave a link in the comments and I’ll update the post with any of your guys’ stuff! Cheers!
Ok, this has been bugging me for quite some time now. As I look over Verizon’s website and see all these leaks on Engadget, one thing keeps popping up that I’m not sure people have noticed. What happened to subsidizing prices? Sure they still do it on phones, but with every new tablet coming out prices go up for both the extra 3G/4G radio and having a contract. Take the newly announced Galaxy Tab 10.1. It’s 10.1″ (obviously) and the same Tegra 2 + Android 3.1 as most every other tablet out there (but in a much more svelte package). It’s $500 if you want just the WiFi version and that has no monthly obligation, you can use it as you please. But for only $30 more you can tie yourself to Verizon and shell out another $720 over two years to get 4G LTE speeds wherever you go. Wait what? Yes, you’re paying more to buy a device with a contract. The whole point of me signing a contract to get my phone is that I’m not paying the $600 MSRP for my Droid 2. That’s why I got it for only $100 because I’m paying Verizon even more than that $720 over the next two years. So what’s changed?
Verizon is getting greedy, and they’re just cranking up the heat on how much they’re screwing their customers. They’ve already gotten us into the highest bills for our smartphones and now they’re going after our tablets and other devices. I just don’t see any other way. You can buy a 3G enabled laptop from them for only $250. Not a netbook, like a real decent laptop that has a contract attached to it so you don’t pay so much up front. That’s how the contract system is supposed to work. You promise that Verizon gets your money for the next two years guaranteed and they give you a discount at the register to entice you into that contract. This new approach is more encouraging me to stay away from another contract with Verizon and actually save money. Sure 4G speeds are great and cost money to expand its coverage, I get that. But that does not justify actually charging more on contract. I’ll just add mobile hotspot to my already lengthy contract with Big Red and end up saving myself that $720 for a tablet. And I hope you’ll do the same. Thanks for listening, and if you’ve got any rebuttals or anything to add, please feel free to let me know in the comments or even on Twitter.
